Blind Rivets (POP Rivets)

Overview

Blind rivets (commonly known as POP rivets) are a reliable permanent fastening solution used where welding or soldering would negatively affect the material structure.

They are widely used in:

  • Mechanical engineering
  • Instrumentation
  • Light industry
  • General construction and DIY applications

Riveted joints provide high strength, durability, and tamper-resistant connections, making them ideal where disassembly is not required.

Construction and functions

A blind rivet consists of two main components:

  • Rivet body – forms the permanent joint
  • Mandrel (pull stem) – used to deform and set the rivet

This fastening method is ideal for joining two or more sheet materials, including:

  • Steel
  • Aluminum
  • Plastics
  • Leather

Materials

Blind rivets are available in various material combinations:

  • Aluminum / Aluminum
  • Aluminum / Steel
  • Aluminum / Stainless steel (A2 / AISI 304)
  • Stainless steel / Stainless steel (A2, A4 / AISI 316)
  • Steel / Steel
  • Copper / Steel
  • Copper / Bronze

Material selection should consider:

  • Mechanical strength
  • Electrochemical corrosion compatibility
  • Aesthetic requirements

Key features and Advantages

  • Permanent, high-strength fastening
  • Resistant to vibration and mechanical loads
  • Long service life
  • Suitable for applications without access to the reverse side
  • Fast and efficient installation
  • Performance characteristics depend on:

  • Head type
  • Clamping force
  • Mandrel retention
  • Hole-filling capability
  • Blind-side expansion
  • Sealing performance (watertightness)

Types of Blind Rivets

Standard Rivets

  • Dome head (standard head)

  • Large flange head

  • Extra-large flange head

  • Countersunk head

Closed-End (Sealed / Watertight) Rivets

  • Provide sealing capability in addition to mechanical fastening:

  • Aluminum / Aluminum

  • Aluminum / Steel

  • Aluminum / Stainless steel

  • Steel / Steel

  • Stainless steel / Stainless steel

  • Copper / Steel

  • Copper / Stainless steel

Monobolt & Interlock Rivets

Designed for demanding applications:

  • High shear and tensile strength
  • Excellent hole-filling capability
  • Wide grip range
  • Strong vibration resistance
  • Reduced risk of water ingress
  • Permanent mandrel retention
  • Note: Monobolt rivets may require a special installation tool.

Selection Consideratioins

Proper rivet selection is critical to ensure strength and sealing performance. Key parameters include:

  • Rivet diameter
  • Hole size
  • Grip range (material thickness)
  • Head type
  • Required strength (shear and tensile values)

Incorrect sizing may result in reduced performance or joint failure.

Masterfix Rivets

Masterfix offers over 25 years of industry experience, providing:

  • Standard and high-strength blind rivets
  • Wide range of materials and head types
  • Professional riveting tools and accessories
