Gabion Retaining Walls

Applications

Gabion retaining walls are widely used in road and railway construction. In hydraulic engineering, gabion baskets and gabion mattresses are commonly applied for slope stabilization and channel lining.

Since retaining walls are designed to withstand significant loads, structural design calculations are essential for systems exceeding 1 meter in height. These must take into account the geological conditions beneath the structure as well as the loads acting on the wall.

Gabion retaining walls are also suitable for projects with several meters of elevation difference, offering both space-saving and cost-effective solutions. The baskets are typically stacked in multiple rows, with lower levels often designed with greater width. Walls are usually installed with a 6–8° backward inclination for stability.

Advantages

  • Permeable structure
Reduces hydrostatic pressure and minimizes the risk of soil saturation and landslides behind the wall

  • Flexible system
Adapts to minor ground movements without loss of structural integrity

  • Easy installation
Does not require complex foundations or specialized construction techniques

  • Aesthetic appearance
Blends naturally into the environment without additional cladding
Customizable with different stone types and colors

  • Environmentally friendly solution
Uses natural materials and has lower environmental impact compared to reinforced concrete structures
